Email (leibowitz@flsd.uscourts.gov) is the preferred method of communication. Counsel may contact chambers, including the courtroom deputy and/or the law clerks, regarding procedures specific to Judge Leibowitz. Chambers will not answer questions regarding substantive matters pertaining to the case or procedures that are otherwise governed by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and/or the Local Rules for the Southern District of Florida. All communications must copy all opposing counsel or pro se parties.
Defendant’s Presence Required: All defendants must be present at all hearings and court conferences.
Motions for Extension of Time/Continuance:
Strict compliance with all deadlines—whether set by court order or under the Federal and Local Rules—is mandatory. Requests for extension of time will only be granted by the Court upon an appropriate motion showing good cause why the deadline cannot be met. Absent an emergency, requests for extensions of time or continuance must be presented by motion no later than 72 hours prior to the deadline or hearing from which the Parties are seeking relief.
Proposed Orders: As required by Local Rule 7.1(a)(2), a Microsoft word version of all proposed orders must be emailed to leibowitz@flsd.uscourts.gov after being filed on the docket.
Intern Information
Judge Leibowitz accepts applications for interns who wish to work in person in chambers. Interns in chambers for up to 18 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours per week during the Summer. Applications should include a cover letter, resume, college and law school transcripts, a writing sample, and two references. These materials should be submitted in a single PDF file to leiboclerkship@flsd.uscourts.gov. Judge Leibowitz’s chambers will review applications on a rolling basis and will accept applications until the positions are filled (usually 3-4 months before the semester or summer begins). Applicants for a semester internship must receive course credit to be eligible for the internship.
