Miami Grand Jury
If you no longer live in Miami-Dade County, complete and return the questionnaire. You will be automatically excused.
Upon entering the courthouse, jurors will be screened through a security device. All weapons, including pocketknives, are prohibited. All electronic devices, including but not limited to pagers, personal data assistants (PDAs), laptop computers, tape recorders are also prohibited. Cell phones, with or without their integrated cameras, are allowed with the following restrictions: No cell phone of any kind may be used in a courtroom or jury deliberations room and no photograph of any kind may be taken in the courthouse. Cell phone ringers must be silenced in the courthouse and turned off in the courtrooms.
JUROR QUALIFICATION QUESTIONNAIRE
It is mandatory that you complete the enclosed Juror Qualification Questionnaire and return it in the postagepaid envelope provided or you may submit it online. To submit the questionnaire online, access the Court’s website: www.flsd.uscourts.gov and refer to the Jury Information section, then click EJUROR. If you need assistance, please call 1-800-865-1775(#3) Monday through Friday, between 8:00a.m and5:00 p.m.
TERM OF SERVICE AND HOURS
The United States District Court summonses grand jurors to serve for eighteen (18) months. Grand Jury members generally meet once every week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Jurors are required to appear as summonsed, unless excused or postponed from service. Twenty-three (23) prospective jurors will be selected as members of the Grand Jury. Those remaining will serve as alternates in the event members are later excused.
REQUEST FOR EXCUSAL FROM SERVICE OR POSTPONEMENT OF SERVICE
If there are compelling circumstances that you believe may affect your ability to serve, or may necessitate postponement of your service, you must request an excusal or postponement in writing. Your written request must include your participant number. If you are requesting a postponement, you must specify the earliest date that you will be able to serve. You may mail your request to Jury Administrator, 400 N. Miami Avenue, Room 5S24, Miami, FL 33128 or you may submit your request online. To submit your request online, access the Court’s website: www.flsd.uscourts.gov and refer to the Jury Information section, then click EJUROR. If you have not received a response to your request one week prior to your start date, call 1-800-865-1775(#3) Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Court will only consider an excusal for the present summons. (Please note: you must return your completed Juror Qualification Questionnaire even if you are requesting an excusal or postponement.)
If you report for jury service and request an excusal after arriving, you will not receive compensation for your attendance on that day or reimbursement for mileage, if excused.
Jurors are compensated $40.00 for each day of service and reimbursed for mileage to and from the courthouse based on zip code. Federal employees will only receive reimbursement for mileage.
REQUIRED DRESS CODE
Appropriate dress, such as casual business attire, is required. Shorts, jeans and t-shirts are not considered appropriate. The temperature in courtrooms is generally cool so you may wish to bring a sweater or jacket.
Assistive listening devices are available in all courtrooms. Sign language interpreters can be requested by calling 1-800-865-1775(#3) Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. upon receipt of summons.
