Admission to Practice in the Southern District of Florida
Southern District of Florida Local Rules 1. and 2. of The Special Rules Governing the Admission and Practice of Attorneys require the applicant to pass a Core Exam with a minimum score of 80%. The exam consists of at least 40 questions derived from the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedures, Evidence and Jurisdiction/Venue and ten questions from the Southern District of Florida Local Rules. To register for this exam, click the link below and you will be prompted to enter your last name and Florida Bar Number. This is your "log-in" to the registration system. The system will automatically verify that you are a member in good standing of The Florida Bar. Upon completion of this step, you will receive an email with payment instructions of the $175.00 fee. **If you have previously paid for the exam, your information is in the database and you may immediately register for the exam by clicking the link below.**
Payment of the $175.00 fee may be made by mailing in your check or calling the Cashier at 305-523-5050 with your credit card information. Once payment has been received, you will receive a payment confirmation email. This will then allow you to return to our website, log-in and proceed to register for the on-site, computer generated exam. Please note: early next year, we anticipate implementing Pay.gov, an electronic system that accepts payment via the internet.
Exams are administered in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The computer generated exam will be held in an exam room at each courthouse with only 2-4 work stations in the room. On the day of your exam, you will report to the scheduled courthouse location at the designated time. Please be aware that you are only allowed thirty minutes before or after your allotted exam time to sign in for the exam. Should you arrive thirty minutes past your scheduled exam time, you will not be able to take the exam, and you will have to return to our website to reschedule.
You will have two hours to complete the exam. Results will be displayed instantly. If you pass, your certificate will be mailed within eight weeks from the date of your exam. If you do not pass, you will need to return to our website and schedule a new exam date. If you do not pass on the third attempt, you must wait one full year before reapplying to take another exam. After the third attempt, there is a $175.00 re-application fee
